More than one million people visit the United States Military Academy at West Point each year. And the new Frederic V. Malek Visitors Center is the welcoming front door for these guests—who come from across the country and across the globe. Designed to employ the latest architectural innovations, the striking entry pavilion uses space frames to support the metal ceiling. Space frames allow for long expanses unencumbered by columns, giving the reception atrium an open, airy feel. This space frame construction combined with a wall of windows creates an interior filled with natural light that boasts unobstructed views of the majestic Hudson River. Serving as a bridge between the existing museum and the new Visitors Center, the entry pavilion sets the tone for everything West Point has to offer. Marrying the academy’s deep connection to history with its modern outlook, the new Frederic V. Malek Visitors Center illustrates West point’s reputation as a premier institution of higher learning.
