Completed April 2017
After years of decay, the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum has been reinvented…thanks in part to space frame construction. The design team at SHoP Architects set out to modernize the arena’s exterior while paying homage to the area’s history. The result is a state-of-the-art undulating façade that reflects the Long Island landscape and beach dunes. A space frame structure allows for the dimensional, flowing appearance by supporting row after row of brushed aluminum fins—4,700 in all. These fins also are a tribute to the Spirit Of St. Louis, the first non-stop, solo, transatlantic flight that took off from nearby Roosevelt Airfield in 1927. Today, with its new contemporary exterior made possible by space frame construction, the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum promises to once again be the “jewel of Nassau County.”
