When the Miramar Metroplex—now known as the San Diego Innovation Center—debuted, it’s distinctive pyramid space frame entrance created an undeniable impact on the commercial sector’s landscape. Designed, manufactured and installed by DSI Spaceframes, the 150-foot-high white steel pyramid rises above a six-story reflective glass office building and can be seen from miles away. The pyramid’s repeated triangle design could only be created by space frame construction and is a stark contrast to the building’s curved walls. Along with its symmetrical appearance, the steel space frame structure allows for vast column-free spans and is lightweight yet incredibly sturdy. The form is reminiscent of the mountains in the distance while the white steel trusses reflect the hangars at nearby Miramar Naval Air Station. While it does not serve a functional purpose, the space frame pyramid is an integral part of the building’s overall design and appeal. Constructed of durable steel and coated with a protective finish, the iconic “Miramar pyramid” remains a local landmark even today.
